SACRAMENTO – For the second straight season, the men's lightweight squad earned a silver medal as the IRA National Championship came to a close.
After finishing second last season in agonizing fashion to Columbia by .7 seconds, the V8 lost another thriller, this time to Cornell, by just .4 seconds. The Big Red jumped out to an early lead, clearing the field, but Princeton remained within striking distance, just a full length behind. As the boats got closer to the finish line, the Tigers made strong push, clearing a pack of four boats, but just short of Cornell.
The Tigers' back-to-back medals are the first time the program has done that since 2009-10 when the Tigers won the V8 race both years.
"I'm really proud of this group and I'll never forget this senior class," said head coach Marty Crotty. "With seven of nine guys returning, we'll have to fill in a few holes and we'll be in good shape."
Princeton's V4+ group (6:32.46) placed fifth in its Grand Final while Navy took the top spot (6:25.82). The Tigers' 4- squad was also fifth in its Grand Final as Navy also won that event.
