No. 5 Princeton Finishes Weekend Sweep With 2-1 Takedown Of No. 17 Penn State
September 15, 2019 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers finalized a weekend sweep at Bedford Field with a 2-1 victory over the No. 17 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions earned the first penalty corner of the contest three minutes in, but Gabby Andretta blocked the shot attempt from getting on the cage. Penn State later had a goal waved off on a corner with five minutes to go in the quarter.
Penn States scored the first goal when Abby Meyers deflected a long pass into the circle by Paityn Wirth at the 20:46 mark of the first half. The Tigers looked for the equalizer on a corner less than 50 seconds later, but Sammy Popper's shot was denied by Penn State's goalie Brie Barrasco while Clara Roth's follow up was sent away.
Roth tied the game up on an impressive individual effort in the third quarter. She dribbled along the baseline and whipped in an attempt into the cage for her first tally of the year.
The Tigers continued to pepper Barrasco with shots including a backhanded attempt by Julianna Tornetta, but the goalkeeper stood tall.
Emma Street touched a long pass from outside the circle just wide of the cage five minutes into the fourth frame. Penn State's best scoring threat in the stanza came following a corner as Baylis stopped two attempts including a bouncing ball that was hit away.
Roth produced the game-winner with 3:23 left in the game. After Hannah Davey's initial shot was saved, the ball came right near the junior who tapped it in.
Princeton's schedule does not lighten up as No. 21 Rutgers and No. 3 UConn come to town next weekend. The meeting vs. Rutgers (6 p.m.) on Friday can be seen in the Philadelphia area on NBC Sports Philadelphia +.
