No. 6 Princeton Drops Close Contest To No. 21 Rutgers, 2-1
September 20, 2019 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 21 Rutgers Scarlet Knights scored with seven minutes to go and held off the No. 6 Princeton Tigers, 2-1, at Bedford Field on Friday evening.
Julianna Tornetta created the first scoring chance as she jumped over a defender's stick and whipped a shot on the cage, but Rutgers' goalie Gianna Glatz stood tall.
The Tigers got on the board directly off a corner in the fourth minute. Clara Roth inserted to Ophélie Bemelmans, who stopped it for Hannah Davey and the sophomore blasted the ball into the cage for fifth goal of the year.
The Scarlet Knights tied the contest at 1-all as the clock ticked near four minutes to go in the first half. Katie Larmour dribbled along the right side of the circle and sent the ball towards the cage that was touched in by Rachel Houston.
Princeton went right back to work near the end of the quarter. With seven seconds left, Davey's ball was blocked, but bounced near Sammy Popper. Popper turned around and sent a shot, but Glatz corralled it and kept the score at 1-all after two stanzas.
The third quarter was a defensive battle as neither team collected a shot or corner try.
Rutgers picked up the game-winner off a corner in the 53rd minute. Gracey Butsack hit a ball that was originally shot by Milena Redlingshoefer by Baylis. Princeton had a corner with under 60 seconds remaining, but Glatz came up with the save and helped Rutgers earn the victory.
Princeton drops to 3-2 this season while Rutgers improves to 4-3. The Tigers welcome No. 4 UConn to Bedford Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
