NFL Update: DeValve To The Jags; Lovett To IR; Horsted, Carlson Make Practice Squads
September 02, 2019 | Football
The harsh reality of Saturday brightened up as the weekend went on for three Princeton football alums.
Princeton had six players go through the NFL preseason and then sweat it out Saturday, when teams had to trim their rosters from 90 to 53. As Week 1 of the NFL season now approaches, Princeton is represented by four of those players, with the two others who are waiting for another opportunity that is likely to come at some point.
John Lovett, the two-time Bushnell Cup-winning quarterback, already knew that he would be on the injured reserve list for the Kansas City Chiefs. Lovett had established himself as an intriguing piece of the Chiefs' high-powered offense with his ability to run, pass, catch and block, not to mention his intensity, before he suffered a shoulder injury. He was placed on the IR a week ago, which essentially means a redshirt year for him.
The other five alums were all cut on Saturday before three received better news Sunday. Those three all were wide receivers at Princeton who are now NFL tight ends.
Seth DeValve was released by the Browns after three seasons, 48 receptions for 596 yards and four touchdowns. He was then claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jesper Horsted and Stephen Carlson, Princeton's two starting wide receivers from last year, both were cut Saturday and then resigned to the practice squad Sunday - Horsted with Chicago and Carlson with Cleveland. Horsted had a great last two weeks of the preseason, leading the team with eight receptions and becoming the only receiver with a TD reception in the last two games.
Horsted was featured on the Bears' website HERE.
Defensive lineman Caraun Reid and quarterback Chad Kanoff were also released Saturday. Both figure to hear from teams as the season starts to unfold.
Princeton was ranked 24th in the STATS FCS preseason poll and then moved to No. 25 after Week 1. After a 10-0 season last year and the team's third Ivy League title in six years, the 2019 Tigers open their season Sept. 21 at home against Butler.
