Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Season With Wins Over Buffalo & Drexel
January 26, 2020 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a pair of 7-0 victories Sunday inside Jadwin Gymnasium, taking down the University of Buffalo and Drexel University.
"It was a great start to our season," said head coach Billy Pate. Our guys played with positive energy and confidence throughout the day. We were certainly ready to get the season into gear after exams (which ended Friday). Though a couple of players were out today due to illnesses, it allowed some guys to step in and get some crucial reps. We are looking forward to our next match on the road with Marquette and Wisconsin before returning home for No. 17 NC State next Sunday. All three matches will be a great test and we're excited for the week ahead.
Princeton vs. Buffalo
The Tigers would start off on a high note against the Bulls by winning the doubles point. Ryan Seggerman and Justin Barki downed Matthew Johnson and Valdemar Hold 6-4 at No. 1 then Payton Holden and Will Peters overcame Vilhelm Fridell and D Giritharan 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Finally at No. 2, Damian Rodriguez and Bill Duo would defeat Simon Wibler and Hao Sheng Koay 6-3.
Princeton had similar success in singles; at No. 4 Barki defeated Johnson 6-1, 6-1 then at No. 5 Roberts overcame Wibler 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1 Seggermen topped Fridell 6-2, 6-4 then at the No. 6 position Duo earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Giritharan. Despite dropping the second set, Peters managed to outlast Hold 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 and at No. 2 Rodriguez would also go to three sets but prevail 3-6, 7-6, 10-5.
