Men's Hockey Ties Union, 2-2
February 21, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A third-period rally denied Princeton a road win at Union as the Dutchmen erased a two-goal deficit in the final period to snag a 2-2 tie.
Princeton had the better of the game throughout, scoring a short-handed goal and a power-play goal to build a 2-0 lead after 40:00. Unfortunately, a pair of Dutchmen goals in less than a minute with under 5:00 remaining in regulation denied the Tigers a victory.
Finn Evans and Liam Grande had the Princeton goals, while Jeremie Forget finished with 25 saves.
Finn Evans netted the only goal of the first period, ripping a short-handed goal blocker side just past the midway point of the opening stanza. Derek Topatigh collected a loose puck off a Union turnover and rimmed it around the Tigers net to Evans who broke free with Jeremy Germain on a 2-on-1. Evans was patient, teasing pass before unleashing his second short-handed goal of the season.
A second special teams goal added to Princeton's lead as Liam Grande scored on the powerplay with 7:13 left in the second. A patient Tigers powerplay unit snapped it around, with Luke Keenan sliding behind the goal to Jake Paganelli who threaded a pass through a defender to the waiting stick of Grande who tapped a quick shot five-hole for a 2-0 lead.
Union scored twice in the third period to tie the game, needing just 0:59 to knot the game at 2-2.
Anthony Rinaldi struck first as the Dutchmen capitalized on a Princeton turnover just outside their blueline. He worked his way to the slot on the ensuing rush and his wrister slipped by Jeremie Forget with 4:35 left.
Just under a minute later, Gabriel Seger tied the game with a deflection in front. A knuckled wrist shot from the point ticked off Seger's stick and through Forget with 3:36 remaining.
Each team had chances to break the deadlock in the waning moments, the highlight for Princeton was a glove save by Forget who was left alone to deal with Seger with 2:11 remaining in regulation.
With just under a minute left, Matthew Thom was sprung on a breakaway only to have the puck slide off his stick before he could get off a shot.
The Tigers had three shots on goal in overtime, including two from Spencer Kersten, but could not find the game-winner.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, visiting RPI at 7 p.m.
