Men's Hockey Drops Weekend Finale At RPI
February 22, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. – Liam Gorman scored his first collegiate goal, but that was the only offense Princeton could manage in a 7-1 loss to Rennselaer.
The Engineers netted the only goal of the first period at the 4:15 mark. The Tigers couldn't clear the zone following a faceoff, and Todd Burgess gathered the puck at the blue line before sending a wrist shot through a screen and by Forget.
The Engineers then tacked on three more goals in the second period on their way to a 4-1 lead after two periods. Some bad puck luck factored in as RPI took advantage of bounces that slid their way to help add to the lead.
5:01 into the second, the puck slipped off the stick of a Tigers defenseman on a clearing attempt and left Jake Marello all alone to backhand a shot through Forget's five-hole for a 2-0 lead.
Burgess would add his second goal of the game with 7:49 left in the middle period. Princeton looked to be on a breakout, but a pass intended for a Tiger instead found its way to an Engineer after a hit away from the puck knocked down the intended receiver. That sequence left two RPI skaters all alone on Forget and Burgess deposited his second of the night.
Princeton got on the board with 5:50 remaining in the period as Liam Gorman scored his first collegiate goal. Jackson Cressey was persistent on the forecheck and he forced an errant pass which Gorman picked off inside the blueline before firing a wrister home to get the monkey off his back.
RPI added a goal in the final seconds when Ottoville Leppanen finished a 2-on-1 with 0:07 remaining. RPI had the odd-man rush after a blocked shot at the point created the numbers advantage.
6:49 into the third period, RPI added a power-play goal when Burgess netted his third of the night. Late in the third period, Patrick Polino got to a rebound before Princeton could clear to make it a 6-1 game before Burgess one-timed home his fourth goal with under 2:00 remaining.
The Tigers have two home games left in the regular season before the ECAC Playoffs begin. Princeton will host Yale (February 28) and Brown (February 29) at Hobey Baker with opening faceoff set for 7 p.m. both nights.
