Softball Team Splits Final Day in D.C.
March 01, 2020 | Softball
The Tigers will have the first full weekend of March away from competition before heading to Florida for the spring break trip.Â
Against George Washington, a big second inning gave the Colonials a 4-0 lead. Jenna Cone's two-run home run was one of four hits for George Washington in the inning.
Princeton got halfway back in the fifth, with an Adrienne Chang walk and a Serena Starks base hit putting two on for Allison Harvey, who drove both in to pull the Tigers within 4-2.
The Tigers got all the way back in the sixth, with a Hannah Lutz double preceding a pair of two-out hits that plated runs, one from Chang and another from Lauren Murphy that tied the game at 4-4.
It stayed tied until the eighth, when Princeton took the lead on a Chang base hit that drove home Lutz as the international tiebreaker runner. George Washington matched and topped that in the bottom of the eighth with a Sidney Bloomfield base hit scoring the tiebreaker runner and Elena Shelepak hitting a two-run homer to win it.
Chang went 3 for 3 with two RBIs in the game while Megan Donahey and Mackenzie Meyer had two hits apiece.
Against Morgan State, Princeton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but it took a pair of seventh-inning runs to secure the win.
Three hits, a walk and an error helped Princeton to the big first inning with Lauren Murphy's three-run double as the highight hit.
Princeton tacked a run on in the third when Ashley McDonald followed an Alex Colón double with a base hit, but Morgan State got four runs in the bottom of the third on three hits and an error to get back in the game.
It stayed 6-4 in Princeton's favor until a three-run fifth inning expanded the Tiger lead. Back-to-back doubles from Lutz and Chang drove in a run, and following a hit batter for Murphy and a walk to McDonald, Starks singled home a run and a Harvey fielder's choice scored another to make it 9-4.
Five hits, including a Cayla Sweazie two-run double, allowed Morgan State to claw all the way back and tie it at 9-9 in the last of the sixth, but Princeton came right back in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back base hits for McDonald and Donahey put two on for Starks, who doubled both home to put Princeton up 11-9.
Caroline Taber got the win in relief for Princeton, throwing the final inning and a third. Starks went 4 for 5 with three RBIs while Murphy drove in three runs and Colón and McDonald had two hits apiece.
