Men's Hockey Wins Game One In Overtime At Dartmouth
March 06, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. – It's not how you start… if you dial up a great finish!
After coming back on three separate occasions to eventually force overtime, Princeton claimed a win in Game One of its series with Dartmouth as Reid Yochim snapped the game-winner by Adrian Clark's blocker 3:36 into overtime at Thompson Arena.
The Tigers thrice mounted comebacks to tie the game, with Finn Evans sending the game into overtime with a breakaway goal at the 17:15 mark of the third period.
Christian O'Neill had a career-high two goals, while Jackson Cressey had two assists. Jeremie Forget finished with 25 saves.
The win is the first over Dartrmouth in ECAC Playoffs history for the Tigers, ending an 0-4 start against the Big Green in the postseason. Princeton is now 9-11-2 overall in overtime in the ECAC Playoffs, and 3-5 in overtime under head coach Ron Fogarty. The OT win on the road was the first for the Tigers since a 3-2 win at Clarkson in Game One of a 2014 First Round series. Since that win, Princeton had lost its last four road games where overtime was required -- including a 6-5 loss in 3 OTs at Brown to close out last season.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead 3:57 into the game. Brendan Demler sent a stretch pass to Quin Foreman who took his defender wide and sent a wrist shot high glove.
Princeton answered with 5:55 remaining in the period to tie the game, 1-1. Christian O'Neill tucked home an equalizer from outside the crease, his second effort slipping through Clark's pads and in. Jackson Cressey and Derek Topatigh had the assists following solid work below the dots.
Dartmouth pinned the Tigers in their own end, ultimately gaining a 2-1 lead after a Daniel Warpecha goal 6:35 into the middle frame. The Big Green cycled through a line change while keeping the Tigers on their heels, Warpecha ultimately flipping a backhand top corner with assists to Sam Hesler and Tanner Palocsik.
Princeton again responded, and once more in was Christian O'Neill. He dialed up a beauty of a power-play goal with 11:12 remaining in the second period. After a Pito Walton shot sailed wide, Jackson Cressey collected the rebound and reset the play. He fed O'Neill down low off the right post who pivoted and fired up and over Clark to tie the game at 2-2.
The Big Green scored 4:32 into the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Will Graber was sprung on a breakaway by Demler, and he elevated for a Dartmouth lead.
Princeton again clawed back, with Finn Evans netting the equalizer with 2:45 remaining. Jeremy Germain knocked down a Dartmouth clearing attempt and slid a pass to Evans who was all alone. Evans kicked a pass up to himself before beating Clark far post to level the game.
In overtime, the Tigers worked a nice regroup in the neutral zone before Corey Andonovski dropped a pass to Yochim who fired home his second goal of the season to secure a Princeton win.
The Tigers will look to close out the series on Saturday night. Faceoff with the Big Green is set for 7 p.m.
