Baughan, Sowers Named IL First-Team All-American; Stevens, McCarthy Also Honored
April 01, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse
A season that lasted only five games was still a showcase of the dominant talents of Princeton's George Baughan and Michael Sowers, and the rest of the lacrosse world clearly took note.
Baughan, a junior defenseman, and Sowers, a senior attackman, were both named Inside Lacrosse first-team All-Americans by a vote of the national lacrosse media. Sophomore Jake Stevens and senior Connor McCarthy were honorable mention selections.
The USILA has announced that it would not be presenting its annual All-American teams this year, and the Tewaaraton Award foundation also announced there would be no award this year as well.
Still, there was no denying how impressive Baughan and Sowers were, even in a third of a season. Anchoring Princeton at both ends of the field, the two led the Tigers to a 5-0 record and the No. 3 national ranking in the final Inside Lacrosse/Maverik media poll and the USILA coaches' poll.
Baughan, as good an on-ball defender as there is in the country, led the Ivy League in caused turnover per game. He was a first-team selection despite playing in only four games, missing the opener due to a preseason injury. He nevertheless had eight caused turnovers and 10 ground balls. A unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection a year ago, Baughan was also a USILA honorable mention All-American as a sophomore.
Sowers has completely destroyed the Princeton record book, and he now has 302 career points, ranking him 16th all-time in Division I, and his 181 career assists rank eighth. He is second in Division I history with 6.43 points per game, and he averaged an extraordinary 9.4 points per game this season to lead Division i. In five games this season he put up 47 points (16G, 31A), leading the country in assists and points while also setting the Ivy League record with a 14-point game against Colgate.
Stevens, a terror on the face-off wings and on both ends of the field, had seven goals and an assist in five games while finishing second on the team with 19 ground balls. His seven goals came on just 10 shots, and he had two goals each against Johns Hopkins and Rutgers.
McCarthy finished the shortened season with 13 goals, including at least one in each game and a career-high five against Johns Hopkins.
