Princeton Men's Soccer Alumni Check-In: Richard Broad '68
July 30, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Name, Class, Current Job, Hometown, Family:
Richard Broad; '68; President, American Soccer Programs. I live in Fairfax, Va. with my wife, Tania, and four children ----sons: Josh, Spencer, Bryan, Alejandro.
Position played and major and thesis topic:
I played midfield. My major was Religion and my thesis was "The Effect of Religion on the Political Career of Al Smith"
Most memorable game at Princeton. Why?
2-1 OT loss to Penn junior year. The result wasn't ideal, but that was the game where I gained a regular spot in the lineup so it meant a lot to me personally.
Toughest loss:
Same game to Penn junior year... It was one of the best games of my career, yet I didn't make a play at the end which led to their winning goal.
Funniest on-field story while at Princeton:
Just about anything our coaches tried to tell us. They often forgot our names.
Best players on the team during your era:
Steve Davidson, Doug Ditmars, Les Buck , Stu Halstead -- They each were All-Ivy.
Most underrated player on the team during your era: Why?
Frank Fuller. He was great to play with and hard to play against. The coaches didn't appreciate him and he quit soccer, where he could have been all league to play ice hockey, where he was on the 4th line! Also: Jack Gessinger: great guy who overachieved and always left it all on the field. Tragically, he passed away while mountain climbing shortly after graduation.
Funniest teammate and any examples of what made him funny:
Stu Halstead, our goalkeeper. He was in his own world and totally oblivious to what the coaches had to say. They left him alone most of the time anyway.
Players on the team you still keep in touch with:
Allan Steere, Steve Davidson, John Ritchie, Steve Mygatt, Walter Smedley, Doug Ditmars, Les Buck, Pete Peterson, Karl Morthole
Message/Advice for the current players:
You probably don't realize how good you have it. You have a great training facility, outstanding coaches, and dedicated teammates. We had terrific guys but lacked the other two.
