Princeton Men's Soccer Alumni Check-In: Guy Cipriano '78
September 30, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Name, Class, Current Job, Hometown, Family:
Gaetano Peter "Guy" Cipriano, Class of 1978. I am president of EI Associates -- an architecture, engineering and construction company -- as well as EI Realty -- a group of developers, property managers and investors. I am married to Debbie (Ross) Cipriano, Princeton Class of 1979 and former captain of the field hockey team. We have two children, Peter and Julia. Currently, I live in New Jersey.
Position played and major and thesis topic:
I was the goalkeeper from 1974-1977 and majored in civil engineering. My senior thesis topic was "Marketing Professional Design/Construction Services".
Most memorable game at Princeton. Why?
Beating No. 1 Brown, 2-1, in 1975!
Toughest loss:
1975 at Harvard. My error allowed the winning goal to be scored by our opponents, and I still have nightmares about that disaster. I worked hard every day to make up for that mistake.
Funniest on-field story while at Princeton:
After I got a knee in the groin vs Dartmouth in 1976, I had to leave the game temporarily. We had no reserve keeper that day so star midfielder George Ligeti yanked off my shirt and went in goal. He shut out Dartmouth until I recovered and reentered the game. We're still hearing about his 0.00 goals against average 44 years later!
Best players on the team during your era:
Allan Marshall, Frank Sharry and Paul Milone were first-team All-Ivy several times. Also George Ligeti received many honors.
Most underrated player on the team during your era: Why?
Wayne Paglieri. Smart defender, tough, perfect power with both feet, unbeatable in the air, fit and fast.
Funniest teammate and any examples of what made him funny:
Charlie Stillitano, '81. Even as a freshman he kept us all laughing.
Players on the team you still keep in touch with:
Almost all of the class of 1978 teammates are all very close today. Addis, Milone, Gummeson, Paglieri, Fleischmann, Milone, Marshall, Ligeti, Kellogg, Garcia - all still close. We all also are in close touch with Bob Bradley '80, Doug Colson '79, and Charlie Stillitano '81. Need to hear more from Frank Sharry, though!
Message/Advice for the current players:
Discipline, hard work , iron determination and relentless effort are needed for success. The world owes you nothing. Life is what you make of it, so take command of your destiny and own it.
