Men's Ice Hockey Storms Back To Tie LIU, 4-4
November 13, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
In the first men's ice hockey game at Hobey Baker Rink in 623 days, the fans got a little extra hockey -- and some history -- as the Tigers rallied back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to salvage a 4-4 tie with LIU in the first-ever 3-on-3 overtime game for the program.
The Tigers had led, 2-0, after twenty minutes but watched as the Sharks swarmed for four unanswered goals in the second period. Princeton scored twice on the power play in the opening 10 minutes of the final frame to tie the game and extend the Tiger's unbeaten streak to four games.
Liam Gorman, Ian Murphy, David Ma, and Corey Andonovski had the goals for the Tigers. Ma and Andonovski each had a goal and an assist, while Luke Keenan had two assists.
It was Gorman who opened the scoring 3:46 into the game, taking a Keenan feed and springing himself free on a short-handed breakaway for his first of the season.
Murphy followed just over six minutes later with a back-hander from the crease to give Princeton a 2-0 lead.
Â
Princeton countered a bit before the end of the second period, putting together a pressure-packed power play in the final 2:30 to gain some energy heading into the final frame.
Ma carried that juice into the third, scoring a PPG 5:42 into the period. Christian O'Neill sent a cross-ice pass to Spencer Kersten, and his feed to the front of the net found Ma who had snuck in from the point to whack home his first at Hobey Baker Rink.
Just over three minutes later, Corey Andonovski sniped home a PPG of his own to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
The Sharks almost snuck out with a win in the final seconds, but Jeremie Forget made two saves in the final 30 seconds -- the last assisted by a sliding Luke Keenan -- to force overtime.
In the extra session, each team had good looks -- highlighted by point-blank chances from Spencer Kersten and Matt Kellenberger -- but neither side could solve the 3-on-3 OT.
The Tigers return to ECAC play next weekend, hosting St. Lawrence (Nov. 19, 7 p.m.) and Clarkson (Nov. 20, 7 p.m.)

Great puck movement on the PP and we are tied midway through the third. pic.twitter.com/ftnAXa7bUp
