Champs Are Here! Men's Soccer Wins Ivy Title
November 06, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Princeton secured its 10th Ivy League championship with a 1-0 win at Penn, capturing an outright Ivy title and clinching a berth in the NCAA Tournament in the process.
After missing the most recent season due to COVID-19 halting Ivy play, the Tigers are the first team to secure an invitation to the NCAA Tournament this season.
The Tigers are 11-5-0 overall and 6-0-0 in Ivy League play. With the win, head coach Jim Barlow now has 199 career wins.
The game hung in the balance until late, but it was a second-chance goal from Walker Gillespie in the 85th minute which stunned the Quakers and locked up the title.
Mateo Godoy sent a cross in from the left flank, and Daniel Diaz-Bonilla had a shot clang off the crossbar, the rebound finding Gillespie off the far post to quickly loop home the clincher and send the Tigers on to NCAAs for the 11th time in program history.
Jack Roberts made four saves to record the shutout -- each of those saves coming in the second half while the game was scoreless.
Kevin O'Toole had four shots on goal to lead all players, just missing on a first-half bicycle kick.
The Tigers conclude the 2021 regular season on November 13 against Yale at Sherrerd Field at 4 p.m.
Princeton will find out its opponent in the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament on November 15 when pairings are announced via the Selection Show at 1 p.m.
