Tokyo Olympics: Holmes '17 Opens Tigers' Fencing Competition
July 23, 2021 | Women's Fencing
Katharine Holmes '17 was the first Princeton fencer on the strip at the Tokyo Games, battling South Korea's Sera Song in a round-of-32 match in the individual épée competition.
Song took the bout, 15-12, leading 2-0 after a period and 5-2 after two. From there, Song kept at least a two-touch margin the rest of the way.
Holmes cut the gap to three at 10-7 with 34 seconds to go, but aside from a Holmes touch that made it 11-9 with 23 seconds to go, the final 34 seconds of the match saw a flurry of double touches to reach its conclusion a second before time in the third period was due to run out.
The Games will continue for Holmes and the Princeton fencers. The two remaining Tigers to take part in individual competitions will hit the strip on Sunday night Eastern time, with the women's saber competition, which will include Eliza Stone '13, beginning at 8 p.m. ET Sunday, and the men's foil event, including rising junior Mohamed Hamza, beginning at 8:25 p.m. ET.
Holmes is set to compete again a day later, with the women's team épée event due to begin at 10:25 p.m. ET on Monday. Anna Van Brummen '17 is the replacement athlete for Team USA in the team event.
