July 31, 2021 | Women's Fencing
Eliza Stone '13 and the U.S. women's saber team closed their competition with a sixth-place finish Saturday at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
After the sixth-seeded Americans fell to third-seeded France 45-30 in the quarterfinals, Team USA defeated seventh-seeded China 45-35 in a classification bout. In the fourth bout of that match, Stone defeated Jiarui Qian 5-1 to double the U.S.'s four-touch lead to eight at 20-12 with five bouts left. In the seventh of the match's nine bouts, Stone defeated Hengyu Yang 5-2 to grow the U.S. lead to 14 at 35-21 on the way to the win.
That sent the U.S. team to the fifth-place bout against eighth-seeded Japan. In a back-and-forth bout, Japan took the lead heading into the eighth of the nine bouts and held on for a 45-43 win.
The result concluded Stone's Olympic debut, and it was the penultimate appearance for a Princeton fencer at the Tokyo Games. Rising junior Mohamed Hamza and Egypt will compete in the men's team foil event, which will begin for the Egyptians against France in the quarterfinals Saturday at 9:45 p.m. ET.
