Tokyo Olympics: Julia Ratcliffe ’17 Competes in Hammer Throw Final

TOKYO – Princeton University women's track & field alumna and 2014 NCAA National Champion Julia Ratcliffe '17 reached the pinnacle of her sport, competing in the final of the hammer throw at the Tokyo Olympics inside Olympic Stadium.
Ratcliffe finished ninth, with a best mark of 72.69 meters. Her first throw went 72.61 meters, which had her in third place after the opening round of throws. She would then follow with a 72.69-meter heave, and her third throw resulted in a mark of 71.79
In the qualifying rounds, Ratcliffe competed in Group A. She finished fourth in her group and sixth overall with a best mark of 73.20 meters.
Along with her NCAA national title in the hammer throw, Ratcliffe was a four-time All-America honoree at Princeton along with a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She was the NCAA National Runner-Up in 2015, the Outdoor Heps Most Outstanding Field performer four times, the Penn Relays Hammer Throw Champion four times, the Ivy League hammer throw champion four times, the Ivy League weight throw champion twice, and the USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2014. Her mark of 70.28 meters from the Larry Ellis Meet in 2014 stands as the school record in the hammer throw.
