Kong Cards 66 as Tigers Lead Princeton Invite Entering Sunday's Final Round
September 25, 2021 | Women's Golf
Princeton holds a 15-stroke lead entering Sunday's final round at the Princeton Invitational, and Tiffany Kong, helped by a second-round 66 on Saturday, is setting the pace for medalist honors heading into the final 18.
The 12-school field includes all six Ivy League programs. Seton Hall, at +7, is runner-up behind Princeton (-8), with Yale third at +9.
Princeton's second round broke by six strokes the program's previous record for best team round, as the Tigers carded an 8-under 280 after going even-par in Saturday's first round. The previous best was a 286 at the 2018 Brown Bear Invite. If Princeton shoots better than 312 in Sunday's round, the performance will surpass the 880 Princeton carded in the 2019 Harvard Invitational for the best 54-hole tournament team score in program history.
Kong stands atop the leaderboard after adding a second-round 6-under 66 to her first-round 1-under 71 to stand two strokes in front of Albany's Amber Thornton, who also had a 66 in the second round. Only one other player in program history has shot a 66 or better in a round, with Susannah Aboff '09 holding the program record of 65, set at the 2008 Ivy League Championship.
Karen Kim carded two eagles in the second round, making the par-4 second hole in two and the par-5 12th hole in three.
Princeton will look to complete its quest for its first Princeton Invitational title since 2007 when Sunday's final round begins at 9 a.m. in a shotgun start. Princeton players will tee off at holes 1 through 4, and holes 6, 10, and 12 through 14.
