Men's Soccer Stunned By St. John's, 1-0
September 28, 2021 | Men's Soccer
A late goal from visiting St. John's was enough to set down Princeton at Sherrerd Field as the Red Storm snuck out with a 1-0 win.
Michaah Garnette tucked home a loose ball in the 79th minute, capitalizing on a second-chance opportunity for St. John's. After a Princeton turnover inside its own defensive third, the Red Storm countered with a first chance that bounded through the box unscathed. It was a reset and reattack from the visitors that set in motion the game-winner, as Atilia Ashrafi slipped a ball through the defense down the right side. Lucas Bartlett then knocked an entry pass through a pair of Princeton defenders to a settled and open Garnette who tapped home his first collegiate goal.
That strike was the difference, Princeton having a last-ditch shot blocked away as time expired.
The Tigers had an 11-7 edge in shots, and a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal in a tightly-defended match. Princeton earned seven corners to just three for the Red Storm, but was unable to capitalize on the chances.
Up next for the Tigers is Ivy League play. Princeton heads to New Hampshire on October 2, taking on Dartmouth at 5 p.m.
