An early-second half goal for Rutgers was the difference in a 1-0 game as Princeton opened its 2021 men's soccer season at Sherrerd Field.
The Scarlet Knights were the beneficiaries of a fortunate bounce as a Cole Sotack service from deep down the left flank bounced off a sliding Princeton defender and into the goal in the 56th minute, the own goal the only difference in the match.
The Tigers did everything they could to find an equalizer in the final 35 minutes, building a 12-5 edge in shots in the second half and tilting the field in the Scarlet Knight's direction. Rutgers keeper Oren Asher was called upon to make seven total saves in the match.
Nine different Tigers had at least one shot in the match, led by Ryan Clare who had four -- including Princeton's best chance of the night in the 73rd minute.
Jack Roberts had four saves in goal for Princeton.
The Tigers return to action on September 7 at Vermont. Kickoff with the Catamounts is set for 4 p.m. in Burlington.
