Men's Soccer Falls To Vermont, 2-0
September 07, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Princeton had the better of the first half, but could not convert on its chances, giving Vermont an opportunity to find its footing in the second half which the host Catamounts did en route to a 2-0 win in Burlington.
Vermont converted on its first shot on goal of the match, taking a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. Off a restart, the Catamounts sent a ball deep down the left side where a cross found Joe Morrison who knocked down a pass to Alex Nagy and the All-American looped a left-footer into the upper left corner just passed a leaping Jack Roberts.
The Catamount goal negated a first half which saw Princeton control the pace of play to the tune of a 5-1 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers nearly took a lead into halftime via a James Wangsness attempt in the 44th minute. but his shot targeted for the upper 90 was deflected away at the last second by the fingertips of Vermont keeper Nathan Silveira.
In the 82nd minute, Jack Roberts was forced to charge out and challenge a Catamount player who has snuck in alone towards goal. Roberts' challenge resulted in a foul in the box and Nacho Lerech converted the ensuing penalty kick inside the right post to double Vermont's lead.
The Tigers outshot Vermont, 13-7, for the game and held a 6-3 edge in shots on target.
The Tigers are back in action on September 12, making a road trip to Colgate. Kickoff with the Raiders is set for 5 p.m.
