Women’s Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Loyola Maryland

TOWSON, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team dropped its 2021 season opener to Loyola University Maryland 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 26-24) Friday afternoon, inside SECU Arena.
Junior Lindsey Kelly led the way for the Tigers with a double-double of a team-high 24 assists and 14 digs. Junior Olivia Schewe led the match in blocks and set a new career-high with seven, besting her previous career-high of five earned at Cornell on Nov. 1, 2019. Junior Cameron Dames led the team in digs with 19, while juniors Avery Luoma and Melina Mahood tied for the team-high in kills, with eight. Luoma's eight kills were are career-high.
Loyola would jump out to an early 4-1 lead, but the Tigers battled back to tie the score 8-8 and take their first lead 9-8 following a junior Elena Montgomery kill. Princeton capitalized on its momentum and took an 18-13 lead, but the Greyhounds narrowed the margin then went on a 5-0 that to help them ultimately prevail in the opening set, 25-22.
The opening stages of the second set were a back-and-forth battle; a service ace by senior Julia Schner would knot the score at 9-9. Loyola would then take a 22-16 lead, but a 4-0 Princeton run led off by a Luoma kill helped keep the Tigers in it and made it a 22-20 contest. Loyola would eventually sneak away with the set, 25-22.
The third set started off evenly-matched as Princeton refused to quit. Down 9-8, a Schewe kill sparked a 4-0 run that featured a pair of double blocks by Schewe and Luoma, and Schewe and Mahood that gave Princeton a 12-9 lead. A 7-0 Loyola run turned the ride, giving the Greyhounds a 24-19 advantage. More strong defensive play at the net in the form of two more double blocks by Schewe and Luoma tied it up at 24-24, but the Greyhounds came out on top, 26-24.
