Women’s Volleyball Splits Matches on Day Two at Towson Tournament

Towson, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team split its matches at the Towson University Tournament Saturday inside SECU Arena, first defeating Morgan State University 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-11) before falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21) to Towson.
Junior Lindsey Kelly had an outstanding day, totaling 75 assists and 19 digs in both matches to lead the Tigers in both categories. Junior Avery Luoma led Princeton in kills as she combined for 24, while senior Julia Schner led the Tigers in blocks with seven total.
Kelly had a career-best performance against Towson, handing out a career-high 41 assists. She bested her previous career-high of 30, which came against Rutgers University on Sept. 6, 2019. Junior Avery Luoma recorded a career-high 17 kills against Towson on an outstanding .517 hitting percentage, topping her career-high of eight from last night's match against Loyola University Maryland. Senior Julia Schner's 12 kills against Morgan State were also a career-best, eclipsing her previous career-high of eight earned against Rutgers on Sept. 6, 2019. Junior Cameron Dames recorded three service aces against Morgan State, tying her career-high of three earned against Harvard University on Nov. 11, 2019.
Morgan State
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle, as the Tigers would use a 7-0 run sparked by a Schewe kill down 8-5 to take an 11-8 lead. The Bears took the lead once again, 17-15, thanks to a 5-0 run but a double block by junior Olivia Schewe and junior Melina Mahood saw Princeton jump ahead, 20-19. From there, the Tigers didn't look back and prevailed in the set, 25-21.
Princeton got off to a strong start in the second set, thanks to an early 5-0 led off by a Schewe kill that saw the Tigers take a 6-2 lead. Ahead 17-13 and sparked by another Schewe kill, Princeton used another 5-0 run to take a 22-13 advantage, and would ultimately win the set 25-19.
Down 4-3 early in the stages of the third set, a 5-0 Princeton run led off by a Schner kill saw the Tigers take a 7-4 lead. The Bears managed to keep it close early, but with Princeton ahead 10-7 the Tigers would go on a 9-0 run and put the match all but out of a reach at 18-7. The Tigers' run featured three service aces by Dames as Princeton went on take the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.
Towson
Towson came out on a tear, going on an 11-0 run that was stopped by a Mahood kill. The Tigers then went on a 5-0 run to narrow the deficit, and a service ace by sophomore Krystal Raymundo made it a 12-8 set. Unfortunately, Princeton could not narrow the gap further and Towson went on to win the set, 25-11.
While the second start started off as a stalemate, the Tigers took their first lead of the match at 8-7 following a Luoma kill as a 4-0 run helped Princeton take a 10-7 lead. The Tigers eventually took a 20-15 lead thanks to three-straight kills by Schewe, Mahood, and Luoma, but Towson bounced back to prevail in the set, 25-23.
