September 10, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
HAMILTON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team had an outstanding first day at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament, first defeating Cleveland State University 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20) before coming back from a two-set deficit to beat Colgate University 3-2 (18-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10) at Cotterell Court Saturday.
In the two matches, junior Elena Montgomery combined for 33 kills to lead Princeton. Junior Lindsey Kelly had 87 total assists, while junior Cameron Dames combined for 45 digs, both team-highs.
Against Cleveland State, Kelly's 45 assists were a career-high. They topped her previous career-high of 41 from Princeton's 3-0 triumph over Morgan State University on Saturday, September 4. Sophomore Krystal Raymundo also recorded a career-high five service aces against CSU, besting her previous career-high of two from the Tigers' match against Towson on Saturday, September 4. Montgomery and junior Avery Luoma tied for the match-high in kills with 13, and Dames had a team-high 23 digs. Junior Olivia Schewe led Princeton in blocks, with two.
Montgomery followed with a double-double of 20 kills and 11 digs against Colgate, while Kelly also produced a double-double of 42 assists and 15 digs. Dames led the match in digs with 22, while Luoma led the Tigers in blocks with two.
Cleveland State
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle; tied 2-2, a service ace by Luoma sparked a 5-0 Tiger run that gave Princeton a 6-2 advantage. The Vikings responded with a 6-0 to jump ahead 9-7, but the Tigers battled back and took the lead again at 13-12 following a junior Melina Mahood service ace. Despite a tremendous set from Luoma, where she led all players with four kills on a perfect hitting percentage, the Vikings would prevail 25-17.
An early 4-0 run saw Princeton take a 5-2 lead in the second set; this would be a lead that Princeton would not relinquish. A kill by senior Julia Schner saw Princeton take a 15-11 lead, then a Schewe kill to give the Tigers a 23-20 advantage caused CSU to call a timeout. The Vikings' attempt at halting Princeton's momentum was unsuccessful, as the Tigers prevailed 25-22.
While Princeton initially trailed 6-5 in the third set, a Luoma kill led off a 4-0 run that saw Princeton take a 9-6 advantage. CSU bounced back to make it 12-12, but a Montgomery kill and a Kelly service ace put Princeton ahead, 14-12. At 15-13, another Luoma kill led a 5-0 run that gave the Tigers a 19-13 advantage. Again, the Vikings would call a timeout but it could not slow down Princeton, as it prevailed 25-20.
The Tigers opened the fourth set on a 4-0 run, thanks to three Raymundo service aces and a Viking attacking error. Up 7-4, a Montgomery kill led off a 6-0 run that saw Princeton take a 13-4 lead from which it never looked back; it ended up winning the set 25-20, and the match 3-1.
Colgate
While the Raiders were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, Princeton was able to knot the score at 16-16 thanks to a Colgate attacking error. The Raiders responded with a 5-0 run from which the Tigers could not recover, as Colgate would take the first set with a score of 25-18.
The second began as a back-and-forth battle, but Colgate used a 4-0 run to give itself a 12-6 lead. A Montgomery kill led off a 3-0 run that saw Princeton narrow the margin to two points at 14-12, but the Colgate managed to hold off the Tigers and prevail in the set, 25-18.
Princeton displayed its resilience in the third set; tied at 8-8, the Tigers used a 3-0 run to take an 11-8 lead from which the Raiders would not recover. A block by Kelly gave Princeton set point at 24-17, and while Colgate would call a timeout it was not enough to halt the Tigers' momentum as Princeton would win the third set, 25-19.
The Tigers came out strong in the fourth set, taking a 5-2 lead on a kill by Mahood. Princeton further extended its advantage to 11-7 following a 3-0 run sparked by a Schewe kill, and succeeded in holding off Colgate for the remainder of the set. Princeton took set point at 24-18 on a Mahood kill, then won the set 25-20 on a Schewe kill, forcing a decisive fifth set.
Led off by a kill by Montgomery, The Tigers opened the fifth set on a 5-0 run. The Raiders were able to cut into the deficit and make it an 10-9 contest, but a Schewe kill sparked a 4-0 run that would see the Tigers eventually prevail, 15-10. The Tigers had completed the comeback, winning 3-2.
