Rao Sets Rookie Mark, Leads Tigers Into Final Round at ODU's Odom Invite
October 01, 2022 | Women's Golf
Princeton rookie Catherine Rao turned in a 4-under 66 in Saturday's second round to lead the Tiger women's golf team into Sunday's final round at Old Dominion's Evie Odom Invitational at Princess Anne Country Club.
Rao carded five birdies, just one bogey and 12 holes at par on the way to the 66, which was Princeton's second round of 66 in as many weekends. Victoria Liu shot a 66 on the way to the individual title at the Princeton Invitational. Both stand just one shot off the Princeton record for low strokes in a round, held by Susannah Aboff '09 with her 65 from the 2008 Ivy League Championship. Aside from Liu, who hit the number as a sophomore, and teammate Tiffany Kong, who did so in the fall of 2021 as a junior, Rao joining the 66 club makes her the first freshman in program history to shoot as low as 66 in a round.
Princeton stands tied for fourth in the 15-team field at +16, even with East Carolina. College of Charleston leads at +5, nine strokes ahead of second-place Penn State (+14) with Sacramento State (+15) third.
Rao is fifth in the chase for medalist honors, cutting eight strokes off her first-round score to stand at even par entering Sunday's final round. C of C's Emma Schimpf leads at -4, two strokes in front of Penn State's Mathilde Delavallade at -2 and with Middle Tennessee's Taylor Edin and James Madison's Kate Owens tied for third at -1. Rao's round of 66 matched the tournament low for the weekend, alongside Delavallade's second round and that of South Florida's Melanie Green.
Sunday's round will begin in a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
