Big Third Quarter Pushes No. 9 Men's Water Polo Past No. 17 Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA – The Princeton Tigers used a strong third quarter to secure an 16-8 decision over the No. 17 Santa Clara Broncos on Friday.
The Broncos started off with the first three goals of the contest before Keller Maloney got Princeton on the board. Luke Johnston added another tally for Tigers as they trailed 4-2 after eight minutes.
Princeton quickly tied the game with goals from George Caras and Maloney again, making it 4-all with five minutes left in the first half. Pierce Maloney put the road squad ahead, forcing a Santa Clara timeout not even halfway through the second quarter. Roko Pozaric extended the lead to two, an advantage that Princeton held at halftime, 8-6.
The Tigers put the contest away with a six-goal outburst in the third stanza. Vladan Mitrovic (two), JP Ohl, Johnston, Keller Maloney and Yurian Quinones all registered a tally in that stretch putting Princeton ahead, 14-6, with eight minutes to go. Santa Clara did not get closer than seven the rest of the way.
Princeton continues the Santa Clara Invitational with two contests tomorrow vs. Fresno Pacific (11 a.m., 8 a.m. PT) and No. 16 California Baptist (4:20 p.m., 1:20 p.m. PT).
