Women's Volleyball Completes Season Sweep of Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University women's volleyball team completed the season sweep over the University of Pennsylvania Friday night inside the Palestra, dispatching the Quakers 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17).
The Tigers were led by senior Melina Mahood, who tallied a match and career-high 24 kills. Senior Avery Luoma recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Lindsey Kelly's 56 assists were a match-high. Freshman Ella Bunde tallied a match-high three service aces, while senior Cameron Dames led the match in digs with 16. Freshman Lucia Scalamandre led the match in blocks, with six.
With the Tigers up 9-7, a kill by Mahood sparked a 3-0 that gave Princeton a five-point advantage at 12-7. With the Tigers up 14-0, a service error by the Quakers led off a 3-0 run, putting Princeton ahead 17-9. Ignited by a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip the Tigers closed the set out on a 4-0 run, winning 25-14.
Penn opened the second set on a 3-0 run, but the Tigers would battle back to tie it up at 8-8 with a kill by Mahood. The set descended into a back-and-forth battle; with the scored tied at 17-17, the Quakers went on a 4-0 run, going up 21-17. From there, Penn held on to win the second set, 25-23.
The third set began evenly-matched; with the Quakers up 8-7, a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip ignited a 3-0 run, giving the Tigers a 10-8 advantage. Penn bounced back to tie it up at 18-18, but a 4-0 Princeton run that included back-to-back Mahood kills, saw Princeton surge ahead 23-19. A kill by Scalamandre saw the Tigers take set point, 25-20.
With Princeton up 8-7 in the fourth set, a Scalamandre kill led off a 3-0 run that gave the Tigers an 11-7 lead. Soon after, another 3-0 Princeton run put Princeton up 14-8. Kills by Mahood would spark another two 3-0 runs, which extended the Tigers lead to nine at 24-15, before a freshman Valerie Nutakor kill on match point gave Princeton the 25-17 victory in the set, and the 3-1 win in the match.
