October 07, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine matches Friday night inside Dillon Gymnasium, using an outstanding .489 hitting percentage to overcome Cornell, 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-19).
The Tigers' .489 hitting percentage was their second-highest of the season, narrowly trailing the .500 they hit in their victory over Rider inside Dillon Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 14. Princeton was led by senior Avery Luoma who hit .636 and had a match-high 15 kills. Senior Lindsey Kelly, the national leader in the category, handed out a match-high 40 assists, and tied with freshman Ella Bunde for the match-high in service aces with two. Senior Cameron Dames compiled a match-high 12 digs, and freshman Lucia Scalamandre tallied a match-high three blocks.
The Tigers took control early in the first set; ahead 11-6, a kill by Scalamandre sparked a 7-0 run that saw Princeton take a 17-6 lead. While the Big Red halted the run, the Tigers would then go on a 5-0 run, taking a 22-7 advantage following a Luoma solo block. Princeton went on to take the opening set, 25-9 with set point coming courtesy of a sophomore Mariah Haislip kill.
Princeton used a pair of 3-0 runs, both sparked by Luoma kills, to take a 7-3 lead early in the second set. Cornell would battle back, eventually taking a 16-15 advantage, but a Big Red attacking error followed by a freshman Valerie Nutakor kill saw Princeton regain control, 17-16. The Tigers did not look back from there, with a kill by senior Melina Mahood leading off a 5-0 run of which the Tigers would close out the set with, and 25-19.
Cornell raced out to a 13-11 lead in the third set, but Princeton responded with a kill by Luoma that sparked a 7-0 run, swinging the momentum of the set and giving the Tigers an 18-13 lead. Princeton finished strong, with a kill by Mahood giving the Tigers match point at 24-19, then a Luoma kill giving Princeton the 25-19 win in the set, and 3-0 triumph in the match.
