
Women's Swimming & Diving Sits First After Day One of Big Al Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's swimming & diving team got off to an impressive start at the Big Al Invitational at DeNunzio Pool Friday, ending the first day in first-place with 391.50 points.
The Tigers started the night with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay; the team of Sabrina Johnson, Nikki Venema, Heidi Smithwick and Amelia Liu finished in 1:30.46. The quartet of Isabella Korbly, Ela Noble, Alexa Pappas and Jaime Chen touched the wall at 1:33.11, finishing fourth.
In the 500 freestyle, the Tigers had four finishers in the A final. Emily Appleton finished second in 4:49.56, Megan Reich third in 4:51.83, Meg Wheeler fourth in 4:52.48 and Caroline Lewitt eighth in 4:55.87. Nathalie Valdman also scored for the Tigers, finishing ninth in 4:53.46.
The Tigers had four make the A final of the 200 IM, with Margaux McDonald finishing third in 2:00.62, Eliza Brown fourth in 2:00.80, Meg Wheeler fifth in 2:01.44 and Sabrina Johnson sixth in 2:02.75. Venema also finished ninth with a time of 2:00.68, and Chen 16th in 2:05.57.
Princeton earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 freestyle; Smithwick won the event, clocking in at 22.86, Sabrina Johnston finished second in 22.89 and Liu third 23.04. Noble also took seventh in 23.33, and Korbly 12th in 23.53.
In the 3-meter diving, Charlotte Martinkus' score of 324.25 saw her finish second, Julia Fidanza took fifth with a score of 277.90 and Maddie Seltzer eighth with a score of 236.25.
The night ended as it began for the Tigers, with a first-place finish in a relay. Pappas, McDonald, Smithwick and Johnston claimed victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:39.40, while Korbly, Brown, Margaret Hayes and Liu clocked in at 3:40.89 to take fifth.
