Men’s Volleyball Drops EIVA Matchup at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. – The Princeton University men's volleyball team dropped an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) matchup to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23), Saturday afternoon.
First year Nyherowo Omene had a stellar day for the Tigers, finishing with a match and career-high 20 kills. Senior Joe Kelly added a team-high 25 assists, and sophomore Ben Harrington finished with a match-high six service aces. Junior Nico Posivak tied the match-high in digs with seven, while senior Jerod Nelsen tied the match-high in blocks with six.
Princeton took an early advantage in the second set, winning the first two points thanks to a Nelsen block and an Omene kill. With The Tigers up 10-8, an Omene kill sparked a 3-0 run and gave Princeton a five-point advantage, 13-8. The Tigers closed the set out on a 4-0 run, with a junior Alexander Mrkalj service ace giving Princeton set point at 25-17.
A kill by Omene led off a 3-0 run, giving the Tigers a 4-2 advantage in the second set. NJIT battled back, using a 4-0 run to jump ahead 15-9, then further extended its lead to 23-16. A kill by Mrkalj led off a 4-0 run as the Tigers showed resilience, narrowing the margin to 23-20, but the Highlanders held on to win the set 25-22.
While NJIT raced out to a 14-11 lead in the third set, a Harrington service ace sparked a 5-0 run that gave Princeton a 15-14 advantage. With the score knotted 16-16, NJIT used a 6-0 run to jump ahead 19-16, and prevail in the set 25-22.
With help from a 6-0 run, NJIT took a 6-1 lead in the fourth set. The Tigers were able to make it as close as 24-23, but the Highlanders prevailed, 25-23, and took the match 3-1.
