Men's Ice Hockey Edged By Harvard, 4-3
February 18, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
CAMBRIDGE – Princeton scored twice in the first period, but multiple near misses off the post the rest of the opening period allowed Harvard to stay in the game and the Crimson rallied for a 4-3 win at Bright-Landry.
Finn Evans, Matthew Thom and Pito Walton had Princeton's goals. Nick Seitz, Liam Gorman, Jack Cronin and Christian O'Neill had assists for the Tigers.
Aidan Porter made a career-high 41 saves, including 26 in the third period.
Harvard scored twice in the opening 3:29 of the third period to erase Princeton's lead. Matthew Coronato scored 1:27 into the third to tie the game at 2-2, and Alex Gaffney followed with a goal of his own 2:02 later to give Harvard its first lead of the game.
Alex Laferriere then would add a power-play goal at the 7:04 mark of the third period to give Harvard a two-goal lead.
Pito Walton got the Tigers within a goal when his power-play shot snuck through Mitchell Gibson's five-hole with 9:39 left in the game, but that was as close as the Tigers would get. Princeton had one final chance to tie the game off a faceoff with 2.4 seconds left, but Christina O'Neill's tip of a Noah de la Durantaye shot went just wide.
Finn Evans opened the scoring 5:39 into the game, looping a wrist shot through traffic from the top of the right circle with assists to Nick Seitz and Liam Gorman just after a Princeton power play had expired.
Captain Matthew Thom made it 2-0 in favor of Princeton just past the midway mark of the first period with his first goal of the season. Christian O'Neill sent a pass back to the point which Thom just kept in the zone before weaving his way by a defender and tossing a backhander towards goal which caromed off a Harvard defender and in.
The Crimson climbed within one in the final minute of the second period via a Jack Donato goal. Aidan Porter made the original save, but Donato was able to slip home a shot from along the goal line with 0:53 left in the middle frame.
The Tigers return to action on February 19, taking on Dartmouth in Hanover at 7 p.m.
