Men's Hockey Defeated By No. 18 Cornell
February 26, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON – No. 18 Cornell netted an early goal, putting Princeton on its heels early and the Tigers could not recover in a 4-0 loss.
Cornell struck quickly, scoring 0:46 into the game via a Sullivan Mack snapshot from the slot. Matt Stienburg settled in deep in the Tiger zone after a turnover, and fed a pass to Mack in between the circles for a quick Cornell goal.
From that point on in the first period, Jeremie Forget stood tall with 16 saves as Cornell pushed for a second goal.
The Big Red finally connected for their second goal of the game late in the second period, Spencer Dirven doubling Cornell's lead with 4:09 remaining in the middle period. The Big Red took advantage of a Princeton player losing his stick, with Kyle Betts threading a pass through the resulting seam and finding Dirven for a shot inside the far post.
In the third, the Big Red added further insurance after Liam Motley intercepted a Princeton pass and then worked down the right wing and fired inside the far post for an unassisted goal to make it 3-0 just past the midway mark of the third. Cornell tacked on an empty netter with 6:33 remaining as the Tigers tried to work some magic.
Forget finished with 30 saves in his first game back after missing four with injury.
Princeton finishes the regular season on Sunday afternoon, hosting Harvard at 4 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers will learn their playoff seeding after that game, entering the final game with 23 points in ECAC play – and a potential to finish in positions 8-10.
