Women's Basketball Advances To #IvyMadness Championship Game
March 11, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CAMBRIDGE - A championship team showed its championship mettle in the semifinals of the 2022 Ivy League Women's Basketball Tournament as the No. 1 seed Princeton Tigers thwarted an upset bid from No. 4 seed Harvard in a 72-67 win.
Princeton had four players in double figure, led by Abby Meyers who had 22 points to lead all scorers. Ellie Mitchell had a double-double, scoring 11 points and collecting a game-high 16 rebounds. Kaitlyn Chen had 18 points, including 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Julia Cunningham had 12 points a game-high four assists.
The Tigers, who went undefeated during the Ivy League's 14-game regular season, found themselves down by seven points in the second quarter but put together a 10-0 run capped by a Kaitlyn Chen basket with 0:03 left in the first half to take a 35-32 lead into the break.
Out of halftime, the Tigers would build a 13-point lead after a Julia Cunningham putback with 4:07 left in the third. Harvard, playing on its home court and trying to extend the tenure of longtime head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith, would not go quietly and eventually a pair of Forbes free throws with 6:45 remaining tied the game once again at 54-54.
The next mini-run went Princeton's favor as Chen hit an and-one on the next possession to regain the lead for the Tigers. It appeared an Abby Meyers three with 3:27 left to give Princeton an eight-point lead would be enough to close out the win, but the Crimson had one more run in them.
Harvard would claw within two points after an Annie Stritzel layup with 0:46 to play, and a three-pointer from Lola Mullaney with 0:34 left made it a one-point game. That was as close as the Crimson would get, though, as Princeton went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final half-minute of play and defended a pair of Harvard treys -- including one from Forbes which would have tied the game with 0:15 left.
Meyers registered her 11th 20+ point outing of the season. Mitchell has recorded at least 10 rebounds in 14 games including a current stretch of five straight. Chen's 18 points extended her streak of five consecutive double-digit performances.
Princeton will play in the Ivy League Tournament Final on March 12 at 5 p.m.
