Weintraub, Chamberlain, Hamza Win NCAA Regional Titles
March 12, 2022 | General, Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
In a first for each, saber Maia Chamberlain, foil Mohamed Hamza and foil Maia Weintraub won regional titles at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South meet on Saturday in Jadwin Gym.
Chamberlain, a senior, finished fifth as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore in 2018 in what was her most recent NCAA regional and just two weeks before she won the NCAA saber title. Hamza, a quarterfinalist at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, finished second in his only other NCAA regional appearance, as a freshman in 2019. Weintraub's win came in her NCAA regional debut as a rookie.
Weintraub's finish led a top-three sweep for Princeton in women's foil along with runner-up Tinney Mak and third-place May Tieu. Princeton went one-two in women's saber, with Galen Cadley finishing runner-up behind Chamberlain, and Lola Constantino finished second to lead the women's épée contingent. Of Princeton's 24 fencers across the six weapons, 20 finished in the top 10 in their weapon. Each weapon had between 33 and 36 fencers.
The regional finishes count for 60 percent of a fencer's qualification to the NCAA Championships, and regular-season results count for 40 percent. A Tuesday announcement on NCAA.com will reveal the Tigers' participants at the NCAA Championships, which are set for March 24-27 at Notre Dame.
