Fencers Set for NCAA Championships
March 21, 2022 | General, Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Individual and team NCAA championships are at stake this weekend as Princeton gets set to head to Notre Dame for the national finals.
Princeton is one of four teams to qualify the maximum 12 fencers to the meet, along with Columbia, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Each fencer will compete against each of the other 23 fencers in their weapon, with each bout win earning a point toward Princeton's total. The team title is combined between men and women.
Women will compete on Thursday and Friday. Competition will get underway at 9 a.m. on Thursday for épée, 11 a.m. for foil and 1:30 p.m. for saber, continuing through the afternoon. On Friday, all three weapons will start at 9 a.m. to complete the round-robin bouts and determine the top four fencers in each weapon who will compete for the individual national titles, based on number of bouts won. The national semifinals will start at 1 p.m. in the order of épée, foil and saber, followed by the finals. The format will repeat on Saturday and Sunday for the men's competition.
The individual semifinal and final bouts will be streamed on ESPN3 (women's link | men's link). Live results will be available here.
Princeton won the NCAA team title in 2013 and has brought home top-four trophies seven times since Zoltan Dudas became head coach ahead of the 2006-07 season, finishing runner-up in 2012 and 2014, third in 2016, and fourth in 2011, 2015 and 2017.
Individually, Princeton has won eight men's and five women's NCAA championships all-time, including in all six weapons. Five of the combined 13 have come under Dudas, including Jonathan Yergler (2012, épée), Eliza Stone (2013, saber), Anna Van Brummen (2017, épée), Kasia Nixon (2018, épée), and current qualifier Maia Chamberlain (2018, saber). Princeton's last women's foil winner was Eva Petschnigg in 2000, last men's saber winner was Max Pekarev in 1996, and last men's foil winner was Bill Hicks in 1964. No Princetonian has won two NCAA individual fencing championships.
