March 18, 2022 | Wrestling
For the second straight NCAA Championships in which Princeton has competed, two Tigers will appear in the national semifinals.
Patrick Glory, a 125-pounder, and Quincy Monday, a 157-pounder, both juniors, each clinched their first NCAA semifinal appearance, with third-seeded Glory getting a 7-3 win over 11th-seeded Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State and fifth-seeded Monday a 5-3 win over fourth-seeded Ed Scott of North Carolina State.
Glory will take on second-seeded Vito Arujau of Cornell and Monday will face eighth-seeded Will Lewan of Michigan in tonight's 8 p.m. session, which will be televised on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.
Princeton advanced Matthew Kolodzik '21 (149) and Patrick Brucki '21 (197) to the semis in 2019 before the 2020 championships were canceled and the Ivy League did not compete during the 2021 season.
Both Glory and Monday also earned All-American honors with their quarterfinal wins, clinching a third for Glory and a second for Monday. Glory becomes the second Tiger in program history, along with Kolodzik, to earn at least three All-American honors.
Against Kaylor, Glory opened the scoring with a takedown in the final minute of the first period before Kaylor had an escape late in the period to pull within 2-1 after three minutes. Glory then added three points on an escape off the second-period start and a takedown before the period was 30 seconds old, and he held a 5-2 lead going into the third once Kaylor had an escape that followed Glory's takedown. Kaylor pulled within two points on an escape off the third-period start, but Glory widened his lead with a takedown midway through the third on the way to the 7-3 final.
Glory will face Arujau for the third time this season. Glory won the meeting in the teams' regular-season dual with an 11-9 decision, but Arujau ended a 40-match win streak for Glory in the EIWA final in a 19-6 major decision. The series during their collegiate careers is split as well at 2-2, with Arujau winning in a second-period fall in the 2019 dual with Cornell and Glory winning in a 10-8 decision in the 2019 EIWA final.
Against Scott, Monday opened with a takedown in the first minute before Scott quickly followed with an escape, adding another off the second-period start to pull even at 2-2. Monday had an escape off the third-period start to lead again at 3-2, and with 11 seconds left, a Monday takedown all but clinched it, putting Monday ahead 5-2. Scott answered with an escape to make the 5-3 final.
The Monday-Scott quarterfinal was the second meeting of the season between the two, with Scott winning a 6-4 decision during N.C. State's visit to Jadwin Gym in January.
Monday has faced Lewan twice before, winning both times. Monday was a 6-3 winner in the Cliff Keen quarterfinals in December, and at the 2018 Midlands, Monday won 4-1 in the round of 16.
Princeton had two wrestlers in consolation bouts, with both seeing their runs end. At 184, eighth-seeded Marcus Coleman of Iowa State was a 6-1 winner over 23rd-seeded junior Travis Stefanik, who scored on an escape midway through the second period but saw Coleman get a takedown late in that period to pull in front, 2-1. Coleman opened the third with an escape and added a late takedown for the 6-1 final. At 197, 16th-seeded Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State was an injury default winner over 18th-seeded Luke Stout.
The bid was the junior Stefanik's third of his career, including the canceled 2020 tournament, and it included his first win at the event. Stout, a freshman, was making his NCAA debut.
