March 26, 2022 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Already an Olympic quarterfinalist last summer in Tokyo, Princeton junior Mohamed Hamza will enter Sunday looking to add NCAA Champion to his accolades.
Hamza won 13 of 15 bouts on Saturday to stand second in the foil competition, with the top four making the cut to compete for the individual championship. The NCAA semifinals will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and will begin with the two épée semifinals, followed by foil and saber. The semis and finals will be streamed on ESPN3.
Freshman Nicholas Lawson put himself in contention to be in one of those épée semifinals, winning 11 bouts to stand in sixth place based on the tiebreaker of difference in the total of touches recorded versus touches sustained. Fencers in the fourth through seventh spots are all at 11 wins entering Sunday, with eight more chances for wins set to come between the final two rounds of competition before the top four are decided.
On the team tote, Princeton is in the fourth spot, the final spot to take home a trophy, leading fifth-place Ohio State (123) by 11 wins with 48 still available for each of the top five teams. Host Notre Dame leads with 155 wins, 17 more than runner-up Columbia's 138 with Harvard third at 137.
Results are available here. Sunday's resumption of pool competition will begin at 9 a.m. for all three weapons.
