March 04, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Princeton University men's volleyball team fell to Harvard 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 26-24), Friday night inside the Malkin Athletic Center.
Senior Jerod Nelsen and sophomore Ben Harrington tied for the team lead in kills with 17. Harrington also contributed a team high nine digs in the game. Senior Joe Kelly added 28 assists, while first year Nyherowo Omene and junior Brady Wedbush had two aces a piece.
The first set began neck and neck, with the Tigers and Crimson deadlocked at nine-all. Harvard pulled ahead after scoring three straight, going ahead by as much as four, but the Tigers were able to claw their back. A Nyherowo Omene kill tied the game at 19-19 but Harvard managed to stave off a Princeton comeback, the Crimson nailing down the first set 25-22.
The Tigers started fast in the second set, jumping ahead to a 9-3 lead. A Ben Harrington kill made it 10-5, before Harvard went on a 9-5 run to tie it at 14. Princeton and Harvard battled back and forth after that, the Crimson eventually closing the set 25-23.
Princeton was aggressive to start the third set, a Jerod Nelsen kill putting the Tigers ahead 4-1. Nelsen would later notch a service ace to maintain a 9-6 advantage over Harvard. The service game was working well in the third set, with Princeton netting four of them in the third set. Harvard would challenge the Tigers late in set number three, pulling even with the orange and black at 20-all. Princeton would even go down one, but ended up scoring the last three points to take the third set 25-22.
The fourth set practically mirrored the first in the early going, but it was Princeton who would take a three-point advantage at 11-8. A Harvard attacking error would give the Tigers a 16-11 lead, forcing a timeout for the Crimson. The orange and black would stay ahead of Harvard late into the fourth set, a Jered Nelsen kill making it 21-17 lead in favor of the Tigers. The Crimson would score four of the next five points, closing the gap to one at 22-21. Princeton had a chance to close out the fourth set at 24-23, but Harvard would score the next three to clinch a 3-1 victory.
