Princeton Turns in Program-Best Finish at NCAA Regionals
May 11, 2022 | Women's Golf
Placing sixth in the 12-team Stanford Regional and finishing ahead of three top-50 programs, the Princeton women's golf team turned in its best finish of its six trips to the NCAA regionals on Wednesday at the Stanford Golf Course.
USC (-15), LSU (-7), Stanford (-7) and Purdue (+12) earned the four team spots in advancing to the NCAA Championships, to begin May 20 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Purdue defeated Northwestern in a playoff after both finished at +12, and Princeton was nine strokes back of the two Big Ten schools at +21.
Two Iowa State golfers, Ruby Chou (-2) and Taglao Jeeravivitaporn (E), earned the two individual advancements to the NCAA Championships as the top two players not on the four advancing teams. Jeeravivitaporn defeated Northwestern's Jieni Li on a second playoff hole to advance after both finished at even par.Â
Victoria Liu led Princeton at +2, just two shots out of the playoff to advance to NCAAs individually. Liu's tournament was the fourth-best of any Tiger in the history of the regional round, surpassed only by the 2-under finishes from Kelly Shon '14 in 2013 and Maya Walton '20 in 2017, and Walton's 1-under finish in 2018.Â
For Princeton, the sixth-place finish was five spots better than its previous best team finish of an 11th-place tie at the 2017 NCAA Athens Regional, and its score-to-par of +21 was 12 shots better than the +33 Princeton had at the Georgia-hosted regional five years ago in what was its previous best score-to-par.Â
