No. 4 Arkansas Takes NCAA Regional Opener over Princeton
May 20, 2022 | Softball
In front of one of the largest crowds in the history of Arkansas' Bogle Park, the Princeton softball team fell to the No. 4-ranked Razorbacks 11-0 in five innings after Arkansas broke it open with a big fourth to help end the game early.
Through two and a half innings, Princeton had outhit Arkansas 2-1 while trailing by just a run after a first-inning walk to SEC Player of the Year KB Sides came home on a base hit from Taylor Ellsworth and an overthrow trying to get Sides going from first to third.
Arkansas pitcher Mary Haff allowed a first-inning two-out walk to Ivy League Rookie of the Year Sophia Marsalo, a second-inning two-out base hit to Haley Hoffman and another third-inning two-out base hit for Serena Starks as Princeton remained down just a run headed to the bottom of the third.Â
Arkansas got a leadoff hit from Sides and an unsuccessful fielder's choice to put two on in the third for Ellsworth, who doubled home Sides before a Danielle Gibson sacrifice fly picked up Hannah McEwen to make it 3-0.
Haff retired the last seven Tiger batters of the game, and Arkansas broke it open in the fourth, with a Gibson grand slam highlighting the inning as the Razorbacks took the 11-0 lead. The home run was just the sixth Princeton has allowed this season while it was Arkansas' 103rd homer of the year.
The 3,058 fans in attendance marked the third-most attended game in the 14-season history of Bogle Park, just less than 400 off the stadium's record attendance of 3,448 set during the 2018 regular season.
Princeton will turn around to face Wichita State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available here.
