Cronin Stuns #12 Providence For Huge Men's Hockey Win
January 17, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
CRO-My God!
Jack Cronin went end-to-end and stunned No. 12 Providence with an overtime winner as Princeton (10-9-0) knocked off the visiting Friars (12-7-6) at Hobey Baker Rink.
Cronin's precise backhander zoomed over the shoulder of Philip Svedeback with 1:53 remaining in overtime to set off a raucous celebration in front of the Tiger fans.
However, after the teams were finally at 3-on-3 in OT, Princeton settled the puck in its own end with David Ma dishing to Ian Murphy who teed up a speeding Cronin who found space through the neutral zone before uncorking the game-winner from inside the circles.
David Ma and Pito Walton each had two assists for the Tigers, while Princeton went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in the game. Ethan Pearson made 36 saves for the win.
The two teams traded goals in the first period, Providence scoring in the opening five minutes before the Tigers answered with a goal of their own in the final five.
Â
Liam Valente got the Friars on the board 2:26 into the game, sneaking open in the slot to redirect a pass from the point off the stick of Luke Johnson.
Â
The Tigers settled in a bit from there, Ethan Pearson making 10 stops the rest of the way in the first stanza to allow his team a chance to find its rhythm. Eventually, Princeton worked itself onto the scoreboard when Adam Robbins tipped home his fifth goal of the season with 4:15 remaining in the period.
Â
Robbins started the sequence with a faceoff win in the offensive zone. Eventually, the puck cycled over to David Ma who fed a pass along the blue line to his partner, Pito Walton, who sent a long-range offering to goal that Robbins got a stick on to evade the Friars' goalie.
Â
At the other end, the Tigers sent seven shots on goal but saw their two best chances not even officially count as shots on goal – the first a rebound chance from Spencer Kersten 6:15 into the period that he slid under Svedeback but through the crease and outside the far post. Minutes later, Liam Gorman redirected a shot that clanged off the post and back through the crease.

The Tigers venture out on the road this weekend, heading to Colgate (January 20) and Cornell (January 21) for a pair of ECAC contests.

Princeton had to dig deep in overtime after the Friars successfully killed off a five-minute Princeton power play which covered the final 3:42 of overtime and then the opening 1:18 of overtime. Princeton had multiple chances to find the game-winner on thetr power play, but Svedeback was up the task -- including a ten-bell stop of Adam Robbins early in the extra period.CRO-MG!
