Men's Volleyball Downs D'Youville 3-0 in Season Opener
January 09, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
Buffalo, N.Y. – The Princeton Men's Volleyball team began the 2023 season on a high note, defeating the D'Youville Saints on Monday night 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-17).
Princeton dominated the match offensively in New York to gain their first win of 2023 and truly displayed their depth as a team.
Multiple Tigers contributed to scoring on Monday night. Ben Harrington totaled 11 kills, 8 digs, and 4 aces for the match, while Henry Wedbush executed a total of 31 assists.
Nyherowo Omene led the team in blocks, with 5 total for the night.
Although the opening set was somewhat of a back-and-forth battle between the Tigers and Saints, once the team built both their momentum and confidence, there was no stopping Princeton.
The first Tiger point of the set resulted from a kill by Brady Wedbush that tied Princeton with D'Youville 1-1. Another kill from Ben Harrington would then again tie the set at 3-3.
In a sequence of different service errors from both teams, the set continued to be neck and neck, until a kill from Ben Harrington tied the set at 24-24 and allowed the Tigers to find their rhythm to take the lead.
Princeton then managed to continue to get ahead of D'Youville with kills from both Harrington and Henry Wedbush, to win the set 27-25.
Set two allowed Princeton to gain more momentum and featured multiple Tigers contributing to the team's offensive power. Princeton took an early 3-1 lead thanks to a service ace from Nyherowo Omene. Nate Thompson contributed 4 kills to Princeton's scoring in set two while James Hartley executed 3.
Once the Tigers took the lead 23-17, a duo of Princeton kills followed by another service ace from Omene closed out set two in favor of the Tigers.
Entering the third set with a 2-0 lead, the Tigers played a tight contest against the Saints, but two back-to-back kills from Alexander Mrkalj helped to put the Tigers up 17-14 and sparked a scoring surge late in set 3.
A final, match point, kill from Ben Harrington allowed the Tigers to take the set 25-17, win the match 3-0, and down the Saints for their first match of 2023.
