Men's Hockey Downed By Ohio State In Opener Of Weekend Series
November 24, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
A tie game after two periods broke open in favor of host Ohio State with an early power-play goal in the third period and two late empty-netters in a 6-3 loss for the Tigers.
Â
Joshua Karnish, Nick Seitz and Ian Murphy had the goals for Princeton, while Nick Carabin, Jayden Sison, Adam Robbins and Kai Daniells had assists.
Â
Arthur Smith made 29 saves, including 14 in the second period.
Â
The Tigers had a 36-35 advantage in shots on goal, including a 15-6 edge in the third period while hunting the tying goal.
Â
Ohio State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from Scooter Brickey and Stephen Halliday,
Â
Brickey started the scoring 6:57 into the game, sneaking open at the right point and walking in unmarked before funneling a wrister through for a 1-0 Ohio State lead.
Â
Princeton came close to tying the game on a power play just past the midway mark of the first period, but a one-timer from David Jacobs in the slot rang off the crossbar inches from finding the back of the net.
Â
The Buckeyes added to their lead with 4:34 left in the first period via a Halliday power-play goal. Caden Brown threaded a pass through the Princeton defensive set to Halliday who was open at the far circle for a one-timer goal.
Â
The Tigers would claw back into the game with a three-goal second period to pull even at 3-3 after two periods of play.
Â
Joshua Karnish got Princeton on the board with his second career goal 4:16 into the middle frame, tapping home a loose puck after a Jayden Sison slap shot snuck through the Ohio State goalie but didn't cross the goal line.
Â
Ian Murphy once again brought the Tigers even, wiring a wrist shot under the crossbar after the Buckeyes turned the puck over deep in their own end.
Â
The Tigers had a prime chance to tie the game midway through the third period on the power play, sending three quality chances to goal but each was turned aside by Logan Terness.
Â
The Buckeyes would tack on a pair of empty-netters from Cam Thiesing and Dalton Messina in the final 1:30 of play to set the final score at 6-3.
Â
The two teams will finish the series on November 25 with a 5 p.m. faceoff at Value City Arena.
