Women's Swimming & Diving Opens Season With Wins Over Brown & Dartmouth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Abby Brethauer era started with a pair of victories Saturday inside the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatic Center, as the Princeton University women's swimming & diving team defeated Brown 159-122 and Dartmouth 205-76, winning nine events on the day.
Competing in her first collegiate meet, Eleanor Sun clocked in at 10:11.02 to win the 1000 freestyle while Hayley Clark finished third (10:15.89) and Mary McKenna fifth (10:28.07).
The Tigers also had three finishers in the top-five of the 200 freestyle, with Ellie Marquardt finishing first in 1:48.28, Megan Reich fourth in 1:53.52 and Nathalie Valdman fifth in 1:53.85.
Marquardt's second victory of the day came in the 500 freestyle where she touched the wall at 4:49.45. Megan Reich finished third (5:02.42), Hayley Clark fourth (5:04.22) and Caroline Lewitt fifth (5:08.53).
In the 200 backstroke the Tigers earned the top-two finishes, with Grace Black winning in 1:58.70 and Sun coming in second in 1:59.56. Isabella Korbly also finished fourth in 2:04.03.
Princeton also claimed the top two spots in the 200 breaststroke after Donata Katai earned a first-place finish in 2:15.78 and Eliza Brown a second-place finish in 2:18.70. Margaux McDonald came in fourth in 2:20.13.
Heidi Smithwick's time of 1:59.06 saw her win the 200 butterfly, while Dakota Tucker's time of 2:02.05 saw her finish fourth.
Tucker also earned first-place honors in the 400 IM after clocking in at 4:17.27, while Marquardt was second in 4:23.44.
After finishing in 50.83, Sabrina Johnston took first in the 100 freestyle. Heidi Smithwick finished fourth with a time 51.44.
Charlotte Martinkus, the 2023 Ivy League Championships High Point Swimmer of the Meet, won on the 1-meter board with a score of 283.40 while Francesca Noviello took fifth after earning a score of 251.00.
In the 100 backstroke Johnston finished second with a time of 55.18, Alexa Pappas third in 55.65, Korbly fourth in 56.76 and Katai fifth in 57.63.
Veronique Rossouw impressed on debut, finishing second in the 50 freestyle after clocking in at 23.76. Ela Noble's time of 23.92 saw her finish third.
The quartet of Rossouw, Sun, Smithwick and Johnston's time of 3:25.57 in the 400 freestyle relay earned a second-place finish.
Brown touched the wall at 1:04.29 in the 100 breaststroke to finish third, and McDonald at 1:04.37 to finish fourth.
On the 3-meter board Maddie Seltzer's score of 278.00 saw her finish second while Martinkus finished third (273.40) and Noviello fourth (268.70).
The Tigers also finished second in the 200 medley relay after the team of Korbly, Brown, Edie Simecek and Johnston clocked in at 1:42.45.
Smithwick finished fourth (55.68) in the 100 butterfly and Rossouw fifth (56.21).
