PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's swimming & diving team opens its home slate on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. inside DeNunzio Pool against Rutgers.
Last Time Out
The Abby Brethauer era began with a pair of victories on Nov. 4 in Providence, Rhode Island, inside the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatic Center. The Tigers earned a 159-122 victory over Brown, a 205-76 victory over Dartmouth and won nine events on the day.
Championship Tradition
The Tigers won their 24th Ivy League title in 2022-23 and the program's second in the past three season, amassing 1480 points to secure a first-place finish. Harvard finished second with 1254 points. In total, the Tigers won 12 event titles at the Ivy League Championships. Nikki Venema '23 was honored as High Point Swimmer of the Meet and Charlotte Martinkus as High Point Diver.
Princeton will look to build off a season where 20 swimmers produced over 150 lifetime best times, and where the Tigers set NCAA "B" cuts in four out of the five relays, becoming the only non-power five school to have more than two. The Tigers also broke eight school records and two Ivy records (200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay) in 2022-23.
Head Coach Abby Brethauer
Abby Brethauer was named Head Coach of the Tigers in August. Brethauer brings two decades of coaching experience to her new role as head coach of the Tigers, most recently serving the past two seasons as assistant coach of Princeton's men's program. A 13-time All-American swimmer in her own right while part of three NCAA Division III championship teams at Kenyon College, Brethauer boasts eight years of head coaching experience from a previous stint at the University of Mary Washington as well as 12 more years of experience as an associate head coach or assistant coach including a stop at Columbia in addition to her Ivy League experience gained the last two seasons at Princeton.
New Assistant Coaches
Juan Sequera was promoted to Assistant Coach in September. Sequera started at Princeton in 2021 as a volunteer assistant, then in 2022-23 helped guide the Tigers to an Ivy League Championship including 10 event titles in the swimming events, long with dual meet victories over Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent Notre Dame and Big Ten opponent Rutgers.
Alexandra Stevens joined the Tigers' staff as an Assistant Coach in September. She joins the Tigers from SMU, where she was a four-year member of the women's swimming & diving team and a member of the Class of 2023. A 2023 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Champion in the 200 freestyle relay, Sevens was six-time All-AAC honoree at SMU. In addition to the 200 freestyle relay on two occasions, she also garnered all-conference honors in thr 400 freestyle relay, the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay.
All-Ivy Returners
Princeton returns 11 All-Ivy honorees from 2022-23. They include Charlotte Martinkus (1-meter diving, 3-meter diving), Margaux McDonald (200 breaststroke, 200 IM, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay), Eliza Brown (200 IM), Ellie Marquardt (400 IM, 800 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle), Meg Wheeler (400 IM), Caroline Lewitt (800 freestyle relay), Ela Noble (200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay), Sabrina Johnston (200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, 100 freestyle), Alexa Pappas (200 medley relay) Isabella Korbly (400 medley relay) and Heidi Smithwick (400 medley relay). Additionally, Maddie Seltzer, Francesca Noviello and Hanna Johnsson Stjernstrom also qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships.
Elite Incoming Class
In its annual rankings of incoming recruiting classes, SwimSwam ranked Princeton's incoming class of the 2023-24 season No. 12. The Tigers' incoming class consists of Eleanor Sun, Mary McKenna, Dakota Tucker, Jamila Isaieva, Edie Simecek, Hayley, Veronique Rossouw, Grace Black and Dakota Katiai.
