Eleanor Sun swam a 1:56.26 200 individual medley, earning Princeton 20 points and giving her a school record on the opening night of the Big Al Invitational at DeNunzio Pool.
Sun's swim was more than 1.5 seconds better than Christie Chong's nearly four-year-old school record in the event. Sun, a freshman, won the 200 IM one night after earning the Olympic Trials qualifying standard in the 200 butterfly.
Princeton built a close lead over North Carolina at the top of the Big Al standings, with 240.5 points to 229.5 for the Tar Heels. No other school in the 10-team field had more than 200 points by the end of Friday's events, with two more days of competition still to go.
Dakota Tucker, another freshman, had a 200 IM time of 1:56.79, which also bettered Chong's old record and gave her second behind Sun. Both Sun and Tucker reached the NCAA championship provisional qualifying standard.
Sun was Princeton's only individual winner on the night, though the Tigers earned big points in the relays, including a 1:30.58 time in the 200 free relay to finish in a dead-heat for first with UNC. Princeton's four swimmers in the event were Sabrina Johnston, Ela Noble, Heidi Smithwick and Veronique Rossouw.
The Tigers also got 68 points out of the 400 medley relay by finishing second (Isabella Korbly, Margaux McDonald, Rossouw and Johnston) and fifth (Alexa Pappas, Eliza Brown, Edie Simecek and Noble).
Ellie Marquardt finished second in the 500 freestyle.
Racing continues at DeNunzio Pool Saturday, with preliminaries at 10 and finals at 6.
