Men's Hockey Downed By RPI
February 24, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton scored the first goal of the game at RPI, but those hosts quickly pulled even and then pulled away by a margin the rendered a late Princeton rally not enough in a 6-4 win for RPI at Houston Field House.
Ian Murphy had three goals for the Tigers – his second hat trick of the season to give him 13 for the year. Spencer Kersten had three assists, while Brendan Gorman had two.
The Tigers had a 43-20 advantage in shots on goal -- including a 23-2 edge in the third period as Princeton outscored RPI in the final frame, 3-0, to push for a comeback.
Ian Murphy struck first for the Tigers, cashing in a power-play goal 6:50 into the game. Murphy came off the bench and right into the play, taking a David Jacobs pass and sniping a snapshot over the Jack Watson's glove.
The Engineers responded 0:18 later, with Jakob Lee following his own shot and lifting a backhander under the crossbar.
Murphy had a chance to retake the lead for the Tigers after earning a penalty shot with 8:52 left in the second period, but his shot was just knocked away by Watson.
That save seemed to flip momentum towards the Engineers as RPI made it 2-1 with 7:28 remaining in the first period via an Austin Heidemann long-range shot which ricocheted off of Porter and just over the line.
The Engineers then added two more goals in a span of 0:53 to build a 4-1 lead after the first period. John Evans netted RPI's third goal of the period, deflecting home a TJ Walsh centering pass with 1:56 left in the period. Ryan Mahshie would then slip free in the slot to one-time a Sutter Muzzatti pass with 1:03 left in the opening stanza.
RPI widened its lead to 5-1 just before the midway mark of the second period, Jack Brackett shooting through a screen and off the far post.
Mahshie's second of the night would make it a 6-1 lead for RPI. After a turnover from the Tigers just inside the RPI blue line, Lauri Sertti broke down the left wing and sent a centering pass to Mahshie at the far post which he deflected over Porter and under the crossbar with 0:53 left in the middle period.
Ian Murphy connected for his second of the night with 6:11 remaining in the game, swooping home a loose puck after a turnover from the Engineers.
