February 08, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
Princeton, NJ - The Princeton men's volleyball team fell to the California State University Northridge Matadors in a competitive, five set match in Dillon gymnasium, 2-3 (25-27, 25-17, 25-15,30-32, 11-15).
The Tigers gave an all-out effort throughout the five set battle, but fell to the Matadors Wednesday night.
Ben Harrington led the match in kills with 19 and aces with 5. Henry Wedbush and Gavin Leising each totaled five blocks for the night. Henry Wedbush also led the Tigers in assists with 42, and Nico Posivak in digs with 12.
Set One
The Matadors opened the match strong, battling the Tigers point for point. Tied at 12-12, the Tigers scored with kills from Nate Thompson, Ben Harrington, and Ryan Vena to help even the score.
CSUN took a slim 19-17 lead, but thanks to another Ben Harrington kill and a series of CSUN errors, the set was tied at 20-20. The set continued to be a back-and-forth battle until yet another kill from Harrington tied things up 24-24.
Despite the offensive efforts of the Tigers, back to back CSUN kills brought the set to a Matador victory at 27-25.
Set Two
Determined to even the score, Princeton fought hard in the second set. A seven-point, Tiger scoring run featuring kills from Henry Wedbush and Ben Harrington took the score to 7-1.
A strong Tiger offense mixed with a number of CSUN service errors produced another Tiger lead 20-11. Nyherowo Omene, Gavin Leising, and Brady Wedbush all contributed Tiger points from kills to support the Tiger lead.
The Matadors failed to ever take the lead in set two, and yet another Ben Harrington kill was enough to award the second set to Princeton 25-17.
Set Three
A determined Tiger team went into set three focused and ready. Another early lead was taken thanks to back to back Harrington aces, and more kills from Omene to put Princeton up 9-3.
Gavin Leising also contributed back to bace aces to keep the Tigers ahead 13-5.
Although CSUN did fight back to close the gap to 18-11, Princeton stayed on top to win set three 25-15 thanks to an Omene ace, several CSUN errors, and more Harrington kills.
Set Four
Another evenly matched set found the Tigers back and forth with the Matadors tying things up 13-13. CSUN managed to take a slim, two-point lead to stay ahead 19-17. More Tiger kills from Omene, Henry Wedbush, and Harrington helped Princeton to tie things up again, all the way to 24-24.
Both teams struggled to execute upon the set points, and the set found itself tied yet again at 29-29 thanks to an Omene kill.
CSUN then managed to take the lead at 31-30, and the Matadors were awarded the set point at 32-30, scoring back-to-back points, winning set four, and forcing the match to a fifth and final set.
Set Five
Set five was another point for point battle that displayed the focus and stamina of the Tigers. An early Matador lead of 6-2 was an obstacle that the Tigers struggled to overcome in set five.
Despite a three-point scoring run for Princeton featuring a kill and block from Harrington that brought the match to an 11-11 tie, CSUN found their rhythm to finish and outscore the Tigers 15-11 to take set five and win the match 3-2.
