Men's Volleyball Falls Short to No. 5 Grand Canyon University
March 15, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
Phoenix, AZ - The Princeton men's volleyball team put up a great fight against No. 5 Grand Canyon University on Wednesday night in GCU Arena, but ultimately fell short to the non-conference opponent, 0-3 (22-25,20-25,22-25) in a hard-fought match.
Ben Harrington led the match in kills with 13, and Henry Wedbush continues to lead the team in assists, totaling 30 against the GCU Lopes.
Defensively, Gavin Leising came up with a pair of blocks and Henry Wedbush recorded seven digs.
Set One
The first set saw an early lead and strong start from Princeton. The Tigers went ahead at 6-4 thanks to a pair of Ben Harrington kills and an opening kill from Alexander Mrkalj.
GCU battled point for point with Princeton up until the first set was tied at 20-20. GCU took the lead thanks to several Tiger errors and Lope kills. Despite another Harrington kill, GCU managed to win an evenly matched opening set, 25-22.
Set Two
In set two, Princeton put up another strong fight.
GCU jumped ahead of the Tigers early in set two at 6-1, but the Tigers managed to close the gap to trail by three at 6-9. Like set one, both Harrington and Mrkalj contributed early Tiger kills.
In another point for point scoring battle, GCU and Princeton were neck and neck for a majority of the second set. Nyherowo Omene and Nate Thompson stepped up big for the Tiger offense, both contributing kills and Omene his first service ace of the match to help Princeton trail by five at 15-20.
Despite a three-point scoring run for Princeton that featured a kill from Ryan Vena and a Ben Harrington service ace, the Tigers came up just short in set two to GCU 20-25.
Set Three
The third set was another back-and-forth scoring battle for both Princeton and GCU. A service ace from Vena tied things up 10-10, and the Tigers continued to lock in.
Back-to-back kills from Harrington put Princeton tied the score yet again at 14-14, and then a Vena service ace saw the set tied 18-18.
Soon after a three-point scoring run by the Lopes, GCU went ahead 22-20. The slim lead was enough for GCU to stay ahead and close out set three with a kill via GCU's Jackson Hickman to allow the Lopes to win set three 25-22, and the overall match 3-0.
The Tigers will be back in action again on Friday afternoon to face GCU a second time at 4:00 PM MT/7:00 PM ET.
