March 24, 2023 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton senior Mohamed Hamza earned his third All-American honor and finished runner-up among foil fencers as the men's portion of the NCAA Championships came to a close Friday at Duke.
Hamza made the top-four semifinals and defeated Notre Dame's Chase Emmer 15-10 to make the final, scoring the last four touches of the bout to expand what had been an 11-10 lead. In the final, St. John's' Jan Jurkiewicz scored five straight touches to break a 2-2 tie, and though Jurkiewicz reached that five-touch lead again at 12-7, Hamza went on a 5-0 run to tie it at 12-12. Jurkiewicz had the next two touches to get to a 14-12 lead, and after Hamza pulled back within one at 14-13, Jurkiewicz added the winner.
Hamza led Princeton's five men's All-American honorees, with rookie foil Brandon Lee finishing seventh in his NCAA debut, sophomore saber Ronald Anglade finishing fifth to earn All-American recognition for the first time, freshman saber Matthew Limb finishing eighth to earn All-American honors in his first NCAAs, and junior épée Tristan Szapary finishing 10th to earn All-American honors in his NCAA Championships debut. Sophomore épée Ryan Lee finished 21st.
Princeton stands third in the chase for the combined team title, with Notre Dame leading at 94 wins and Columbia second at 79 ahead of Princeton's 77. All three schools will have six fencers in the women's competition set to begin Saturday at 9 a.m. for épée, 11 a.m. for foil and 1 p.m. for saber.
